HUD's Major Updates to Manufactured Home Rules Aim to Increase Affordability and Accessibility

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has recently made big changes to the rules for making manufactured homes, also known as mobile homes. 

These changes include adding or updating 90 standards to make sure these homes have features people like, such as big open living spaces, easy access for everyone, and even attics. 

This is the biggest update in over 30 years and aims to make it easier and cheaper to build these homes, which in turn will help reduce housing costs for many American families.

For the first time, these new rules will allow for manufactured homes that have up to four units under one roof, which is great news for creating affordable places to live in cities and towns. 

HUD is making these changes to encourage more people to consider manufactured homes as a good housing option that doesn’t cost a lot of money. They've also made it quicker for builders to get approval to start construction on multi-unit homes, so they don't have to wait six months for the new rules to kick in.

This update is part of a larger effort by the Biden-Harris Administration to increase the number of affordable and energy-efficient manufactured homes available in the country. 

Manufactured homes have been providing safe and affordable housing options for over 20 million people and families, governed by what is known as the "HUD Code," since it was first introduced as federal law back in 1974.

With these new updates, manufactured homes will have more modern designs and features, making them even safer and akin to traditionally built houses. 

This means better materials, smarter designs for energy use, and even quicker construction times. All of these improvements are aimed at making sure everyone has access to quality, affordable homes.

HUD is excited to lead the way in making sure that manufactured homes continue to be a vital part of solving the affordable housing shortage in the country. They are dedicated to keeping communities strong and making sure there are plenty of good homes for everyone.
